Let customers tip or pay part online

Let customers add a tip, or pay part of an invoice now and the rest later, when they pay by card online.

When a customer pays an invoice by card online, they can add a tip and, if you allow it, pay only part of it now. Utopia keeps the tip apart from the invoice and works out what's left.

Before you start

Steps

  1. Go to Settings, then Invoices.
  2. Under New invoice defaults, turn on Tipping and set your three Tip choices.
  3. Turn on Partial payments if customers may pay part of an invoice.
  4. Under Smallest payment, pick % of the balance or Dollar amount. It starts at 25%.
  5. Tap Save changes. New invoices use these.
  6. To change one invoice, open it and use Tips and Partial payments under How they can pay.

What your customer sees

Before the card page, a short page asks:

  • Add a tip: your three choices in dollars, plus Custom and No tip. Nothing is picked for them.
  • How much: the full balance, or Pay part of it and type the amount.

The pay button shows the total being charged. A tip is never more than the invoice total.

What you see

The tip never counts toward what's owed. On the invoice, the payment shows the amount with the tip under it, and the receipt lists the tip. After a part payment the invoice shows Partially paid. The next time they pay, the page asks for what's left.

Didn't work?

My customer wasn't asked for a tip

Tips are off on that invoice. Open it and turn on Tips under How they can pay.

My customer can't pay part of it

Partial payments is off on that invoice, or what's owed is too small to split. A part payment must be at least your Smallest payment, never under $1.00, and leave at least $1.00 for later.

It says the smallest payment is the whole balance

The balance is under your Smallest payment, so it's paid in full.
